Course Structure and Content
The classes are structured around a design exercise that begins with the real starting point for architecture – the relationship between an architect and a client. You will suggest an activity (such as a place to eat lunch, read a book or sleep) that, through discussion, will become the brief for a hypothetical small building for another participant to design. Similarly, you will be given a brief from another participant. All will be revealed at the first class.
The course has a balance of illustrated talks, exercises, one to one tuition and reviews in groups. A central part of the activity is model making which takes place in an informal studio environment.
• Improving visual and verbal communication skills through drawing, modeling and public speaking exercises.
• A better understanding of what factors affect the shape of the buildings that surround us including the consideration of; place, materials, form, time, use, junctions, surfaces and meaning.
• An ability to undertake a focused critical appraisal of proposed building developments.
